The Texas Distance Learning Association Board of Directors recently honored Senator Kirk Watson as the 2015 Legislator of the Year Award recipient. The TxDLA Legislator of the Year Award is presented to local, state or federal official who has substantially assisted in the advancement of Distance Learning in the State of Texas. Watson is the author of SB 1470 which will authorize Texas to participate in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA).
Higher education in Texas consists of 146 public and independent institutions. Key higher education stakeholders agree that SARA offers benefits to the state, institutions and students. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will be the SARA portal agency. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's mission is to promote access, affordability, quality, success, and cost efficiency in the state's institutions of higher education.
After four legislative sessions, Sen. Watson has been widely recognized for his idealism as well as his effectiveness. Texas Monthly magazine recognized him as one of Texas’ 10 Best Legislators in 2009. It also named him Legislative Rookie of the Year in 2007 and gave him an Honorable Mention in its coverage of best legislators in 2011 and 2013.
Sen. Watson’s top legislative priority has been working to ensure that Texas offers as much opportunity to our children as it did to him. He believes the state should invest in great public schools and ready access to healthcare.
